The Sassi di Matera, or stones of Matera, are ancient cave dwellings in Italy that are said to be among the oldest settlements in the country. Apparently, residents of the buildings are living in the same houses as their ancestors did 9,000 years ago. This is the only place in the world where that this can be said for.
The Sassi also served as the set for Mel Gibson’s controversial The Passion of the Christ film.
