The first day that T and I spent in Germany, we didn’t have any motivation at all. We had gotten married, headed to LAX the next day to hop a flight to Germany, and a little over 12 hours later we arrived in Munich. The woman at the airport laughed and asked why we would ever leave California for Munich, especially in October. Woops.
A bowl of yummy German soup and dumplings at the airport tasted so good, until we realized that our luggage was rolling around the carousel by itself and T and I started to freak out. I was done eating and he still had a whole boot of beer left, so I offered to go get it and wait with the luggage while he finished.
T was raring to go when we met back up, but because of my insane fear of flying and the fact that I had been up for over 24 hours (I can’t sleep on airplanes) I was spent. He ran out while I napped and got me strudels from Café Rischart and weird food from McDonald’s like shrimp with curry sauce. I was a happy newlywed.
T of course was shocked by the cold and I loved it! That’s what happens when a girl from Buffalo goes to Germany with a guy from California, I guess!
The next day we woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and went to the München Hauptbahnhof, the train station, to meet up with a tour guide. I grabbed a hot cocoa and we boarded our train to Füssen, a small town in Bavaria with our two new travel buddies from Australia and Israel.

We had finally arrived in Füssen where we learned a short history of the town and the royalty that occupied it.

Then we began our uphill trek to Neuschwanstein Castle, which translates to “new swan stone” and also serves as the castle that inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle. First, we stopped for German beer, pretzels, glühwein, sauerkraut and sausages.

And there it is! I wish you could see the bridge we were standing on. I was losing my gourd! The road to the bridge was closed and our tour guide convinced us to jump the fence anyway. This narrow, rickety little bridge was completely covered in snow and I wiped out twice walking the road to get there. T has my face on video as I’m walking across it and – looking back – it’s hilarious.
A very enthusiastic group of tourists yelled “thank you” extremely loud when someone took their photo for them and I latched onto the edge of the bridge thinking the whole thing was going down because of the snow’s weight.

Trust me, I’m terrified in this picture – haha!
After stopping for some quick shopping (gloves, hats and jackets) we boarded the train again, but this time for home. We flew threw around the base of the Alps and the sunset was incredible.

After another sausage meal – my German/Austrian roots were in full force! – we headed to bed.
The next day, we went to check out Marienplatz. T had stumbled upon this huge center of activity while on tour with his band and couldn’t wait to show me around.
Did I mention it was Halloween? No one cared though, apparently it’s just now catching on over there. We always miss Halloween, and when we don’t, we resort to Snooki and Pauly D for a last-minute costume. Never again.

For lunch we stopped into a little restaurant where I ordered Kartoffelkloesse, German potato dumpings. We snacked on hot Bavarian almonds from a street cart on our walk. This was one of my favorite parts from Germany, because as I child I remember going Christmas shopping with my mom and grandma, and there was always a peddler selling Bavarian almonds that we would buy. The smell is intoxicating with the sugar and cinnamon hardened glaze.

The famous Hofbräuhaus München. There was a huge soccer game going on and to T’s dismay, Hofbräuhaus was packed. We stopped at another pub down the road and sat for hours drinking coffee and watching the soccer games. Bayern Munich won.
Living a little with all the food options is definitely a vacation favorite of mine. What is your favorite guilty pleasure to indulge in while traveling?
